Spekboom Camp is a delightful ‘breakaway’ camp from the main Buffalo Kloof lodge, and provides an opportunity for guests to experience the ultimate “Out of Africa” bush experience.
Spekboom Camp is aptly named after the prolific indigenous plant ‘Spekboom’ (Portulacaria Afra) which grows abundantly in and around it. This very special succulent (and evergreen) plant is a true environmental miracle worker, with the ability to tackle carbon emissions like no other plant.
Accommodation is provided in individual en suite “tree houses”, with comfortable extra king size beds and percale linen. An efficient supply of hot water for the showers is provided by means of the “donkey boiler”( water heated by means of a fire). Guests are able to immerse themselves in the sights and sounds of nature. There are 3 different types of accommodation to choose from – ALL bedrooms are en suite with showers and tin roof.
Tree House Rooms built from well insulated wood.
Tented bedrooms including dressing room
The entertainment area offers an outdoor experience surrounded and protected by the natural vegetation, where guests can sit and socialize around the warmth of an enormous camp fire. Alternatively the spacious indoor area with dining and lounge offers an uninterrupted view of the reserve where animals are often seen to be traversing. Wifi and television is available in this area. The self catering option allows for various cooking – open and indoor wood fire braai, wood fired pizza oven, gas braai, gas oven and 2 x gas hobs with ample fridge and freezer space. The camp will be serviced daily and laundry at an additional charge can be provided.
Environmentalists will be happy to note that Spekboom Camp is entirely self-sufficient, utilizing solar energy for power supply, and water sourced from a borehole. In building the camp, wherever possible material from the reserve, as in the original sneezewood fence poles, dropper fence poles, sandstone slate and stone from building ruins were used to create an authentic and charming feel.
A stay at this camp leaves every guest feeling relaxed, rejuvenated and honored to have experienced the African bush ‘up close and personal’ at its authentic best.
We welcome you to enjoy the unspoilt beauty of the camp, to appreciate the sights and sounds of nature, and to especially take note of the thousands of stars so bright they seem within easy reach.
